Located in the heart of Alor Setar, Kedah, Zahir Mosque (Masjid Zahir) is one of Malaysia’s oldest mosques and a prominent example of Islamic architecture. Completed in 1912, the mosque is recognised for its distinctive black domes, intricate ornamentation and historical significance. It has also been named among the world’s ten most beautiful mosques and serves as the venue for Kedah’s annual Quran recitation competition.

A Landmark Rooted in History

Zahir Mosque stands on a site that was once a cemetery for Kedah warriors who died during the Siamese invasion of Kedah in 1821. Its establishment reflects the state’s historical and religious heritage, making it a significant destination for visitors interested in Malaysian history and Islamic culture.

The mosque’s architectural design was inspired by Azizi Mosque in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Both structures share distinctive domes and elaborately ornamented walls, reflecting architectural influences that extend across the region.

Distinctive Domes and Intricate Details

One of Zahir Mosque’s most recognisable features is its main black dome, surrounded by five smaller domes. These five domes symbolise the five pillars of Islam, giving the structure both architectural distinction and religious significance.

Inside, the main prayer hall measures 62 feet by 62 feet, forming a perfect square. Double columns and ornamented arches contribute to the building’s intricate design, while the interior of the main dome features carvings of verses from the Holy Quran.

The mosque’s five smaller domes are positioned above an eight-foot-wide verandah that encircles the main prayer hall. This surrounding walkway provides a peaceful space for visitors to appreciate the architecture and atmosphere of the historic building.

Preserving a Century of Heritage

Despite being more than a century old, Zahir Mosque has undergone only two major renovations, in 1960 and 1975. Its enduring architectural character continues to reflect the craftsmanship and design traditions that shaped the mosque when it was built.

Beyond its role as a place of worship, the mosque remains an important cultural landmark in Kedah. Its combination of historical significance, religious symbolism and distinctive architectural features makes it a notable attraction for visitors exploring Alor Setar.

Visitor Guidelines

Visitors wishing to enter Zahir Mosque should dress modestly as a sign of respect for its religious function. Both men and women should ensure that their shoulders and knees are covered. Women are advised to bring a headscarf to cover their hair when entering the mosque.

How to Get There

Zahir Mosque is centrally located in Alor Setar, making it accessible to visitors exploring the city. It is situated beside a main road and is a short distance from Alor Setar Tower and Aman Central Mall, allowing travellers to include the mosque in a wider sightseeing itinerary around Kedah’s capital.

With its striking black domes, detailed ornamentation and deep historical roots, Zahir Mosque offers visitors an opportunity to discover an important part of Malaysia’s Islamic architectural and cultural heritage.
