Behind every successful cultural production lies a hidden architecture of dedication. Since its inception in 2007, Indonesian Culture Night (ICN) has evolved from a student-led initiative into a prominent cultural movement in Singapore. It is a production built from the ground up—where the quiet corners of the backstage meet the strategic foresight of external relations to create a professional theatrical experience.

The Foundation of Collaborative Excellence

At its core, ICN is defined by a mission to introduce Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage while nurturing the growth of student talents. The production thrives on a unique collaborative spirit: every role, from the creative teams designing original scripts and music to the external committees securing strategic partnerships, contributes to a singular, cohesive vision. This synergy ensures that when the performers step into the spotlight, they are supported by a robust organizational ecosystem that allows their brilliance to shine

A Legacy of Storytelling: From Senjakala to Amerta
ICN serves as a platform to explore Indonesia’s vast cultural richness through the lens of memory and reflection. Last year’s production, ICN 2025: Senjakala, captivated audiences with a narrative centered on a director’s journey to find meaning amidst social stigma and grief in 2010s Indonesia.

Building on that momentum, the production now prepares for its next grand chapter, Amerta: A Musical. Set to take the stage at the Drama Centre Theatre, National Library Building on 14 February 2026, this performance explores the intertwining stories of love, ambition, and social justice in 1970s Indonesia.

Set against the vibrant backdrop of traditional
batik markets, the story follows the collision of two
contrasting worlds: Arum Cahyaningtyas, a
spirited journalist determined to give voice to the
silenced workers in the batik industry, and
Abimana Paramudya, a reserved poet attuned to
the world’s quiet details. As Arum dives into the
realities of the artisans with Abimana as her
confidant, these dreamers discover that love and
ambition are not always compatible paths.

Through their shared journey, they navigate the complex terrain of personal fulfillment, ultimately realizing that love is not earned through labor but is something every individual inherently deserves.

A Home for the Global Stage

With over 10,000 attendees welcomed across nearly two decades, ICN has become a “second home” for NTU Indonesian undergraduate students and a bridge for the general public to experience Indonesia’s traditions. By bringing together rich cultural traditions and modern theater through music, dance, and costume, ICN creates stories that span generations.

As the curtain rises on Amerta, the production stands as a testament to the power of unity. We invite the public to witness this celebration of identity and artistry—a home built on the belief that culture is a story best told together.
