
The South African High Commission and the Embassy of Mexico in Singapore jointly organised an event to celebrate the opening of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The South African High Commission in Singapore, in collaboration with the Embassy of Mexico in Singapore, hosted an event at CHIJMES Singapore on 11 June 2026 to mark the opening of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The event was attended by members of the diplomatic community, partners, supporters and football fans for a public viewing of the tournament’s opening match between South Africa and Mexico.

Singapore’s Minister for Law and Second Minister for Home Affairs, Edwin Tong, attended the event. The South African High Commission also acknowledged the contributions of the Embassy of Mexico, partners, sponsors and CHIJMES Singapore in supporting the occasion.

The event featured cultural performances and entertainment reflecting both Latin American and African traditions. According to the South African High Commission, the programme highlighted the role of football in bringing together people from different cultures, backgrounds and communities through a shared interest in the sport.
