President H.E. Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. reaffirmed the Philippines’ steadfast commitment to the rule of law, the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and a rules-based international order during the Diplomatic Reception marking the 10th Anniversary of the 2016 Arbitral Award. Addressing diplomats and distinguished guests, the President stressed that disputes in the South China Sea must always be resolved peacefully through dialogue and in accordance with international law.

Highlighting the significance of the landmark ruling, President Marcos declared that the South China Sea “must never be an arena of conflict” but should remain “a sea of peace, cooperation, and connectivity”. He underscored that the 2016 Arbitral Award continues to serve as an important foundation for upholding international law and promoting stability in the region.

The President also emphasised that the award represents more than a legal victory for the Philippines. He noted that it safeguards the rights, livelihoods and dignity of Filipino fisherfolk and coastal communities whose lives depend on the sustainable use of marine resources. The ruling, he said, reinforces the country’s long-standing vision of a peaceful and cooperative maritime region that benefits all nations.

President Marcos further expressed his appreciation to the Philippines’ international partners for their continued support in defending a rules-based international order. Describing the rule of law as “a great equaliser of all nations”, he encouraged the international community to look beyond legal principles alone and work collectively to protect vulnerable communities, conserve the world’s oceans and ensure lasting peace and stability for future generations.
