Seven Timorese public officials prepared to pursue postgraduate studies in Japan under the JDS scholarship programme.
Timor-Leste continued to strengthen its human resources as ASEAN’s newest member, with seven public officials preparing to pursue postgraduate studies in Japan under the Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS) for the 2026–2028 period.
The recipients, drawn from Timor-Leste’s ministries and public institutions, were set to study at Hiroshima University, the International University of Japan and Gifu University. Their areas of study included public health, climate change, public financial management and trade facilitation.
At the JDS Send-off Reception in Dili, H.E. Yasushi Yamamoto, Ambassador of Japan to Timor-Leste, described human resource development, particularly among younger generations, as a priority of Japan’s assistance. He encouraged the recipients to expand their knowledge and develop lasting professional networks.
The latest group constituted the eighth JDS cohort from Timor-Leste. Including the seven recipients, 50 Timorese had participated in the programme, with 38 having completed master’s degrees and returned to contribute through their respective institutions.
Mr. Policarpo Almeida Boavida, Director-General of the National Institute of Public Administration (INAP), encouraged the recipients to return with knowledge and skills that could strengthen public institutions and services in Timor-Leste.
