Australia highlighted navigational safety, environmental protection and international law at the 17th Cooperation Forum on the Straits of Malacca and Singapore.
Counsellor Jo McIntosh delivered Australia’s General Statement at the 17th Cooperation Forum of the Cooperative Mechanism on the Safety of Navigation and Environmental Protection in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore (SOMS). Australia described the SOMS as an important waterway supporting regional prosperity, global trade and energy security.
As a maritime trading nation, Australia expressed its interest in the continued safety and openness of the SOMS. Australia also stated its commitment to working with partners on navigational safety, environmental protection and adherence to international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
