Kazakhstan and Singapore’s Changi Airport Group are exploring closer cooperation on the development of a new airport in Astana. The partnership could bring international airport management expertise, advanced technologies and sustainable solutions to Kazakhstan’s aviation sector.
Kazakhstan Prime Minister Mr. Olzhas Bektenov held a meeting with Mr. Yam Kum Weng, Chief Executive Officer of Changi Airport Group (CAG), to discuss opportunities for cooperation in the development of the country’s aviation infrastructure. The talks focused on attracting international expertise and technological capabilities to support Kazakhstan’s plans to strengthen its position as a regional aviation hub.
During the meeting, PM Bektenov highlighted ongoing efforts to develop Astana’s airport infrastructure in line with President H.E. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s instructions to establish an international aviation hub. A key element of these plans is the construction of a second airport in the capital, creating opportunities for greater practical cooperation between Kazakhstan and Singapore.
Changi Airport Group manages Singapore’s Changi International Airport and Seletar Airport. Through its subsidiary, Changi Airports International, the group is involved in the development, management and master planning of airport infrastructure at more than 60 airports across over 20 countries. Its expertise also includes digital solutions such as biometric technologies and automation, alongside initiatives supporting carbon neutrality.
Mr. Yam Kum Weng expressed CAG’s interest in further deepening cooperation with Kazakhstan, recognising Astana’s potential to serve as a strategic bridge between Europe and Asia. He confirmed the group’s readiness to contribute its knowledge, experience and industry expertise to the construction of the capital’s new airport and its development as a regional aviation hub.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming the strong level of Kazakh-Singaporean relations and their shared interest in expanding practical cooperation. Future collaboration could extend beyond airport construction to the creation of a comprehensive airport ecosystem, supporting connectivity, technology, operational efficiency and sustainable aviation development in Kazakhstan.
