Singapore and Brazil discussed trade, investment, sustainability, digitalisation and further ASEAN engagement.
Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mauro Vieira was on an official visit to Singapore from 6 to 8 September 2026. On 7 September, Minister Vieira was hosted to breakfast by Singapore Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, followed by a lunch hosted by Minister for Sustainability and the Environment and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations Grace Fu, as the two sides discussed bilateral cooperation and Brazil’s engagement with ASEAN.
During the breakfast meeting, Dr Balakrishnan and Minister Vieira discussed the relationship between Singapore and Brazil and ways to deepen bilateral cooperation in trade and investment, agri-trade, digitalisation and sustainability. The Ministers also looked forward to commemorating the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Brazil in 2027.
The two Ministers discussed Brazil’s engagement with ASEAN during Singapore’s Chairmanship of ASEAN. Their discussions covered opportunities for Brazil to deepen its engagement with the regional grouping during Singapore’s ASEAN Chairmanship.
Later on 7 September, Minister Vieira was hosted to lunch by Grace Fu. The Ministers welcomed the entry into force of the MERCOSUR-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (MCSFTA) between Singapore and Brazil on 1 August 2026.
The MCSFTA provides for the elimination of tariffs and improved market access for companies from Singapore and Brazil, with the aim of facilitating greater bilateral trade and investment. Minister Vieira and Ms Fu also discussed further cooperation in food security, sustainability and innovation.
The official visit provided an opportunity for Singapore and Brazil to discuss bilateral economic cooperation, trade relations and areas of mutual interest. The two countries also looked ahead to the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027 and Brazil’s engagement with ASEAN.
On 8 September, Minister Vieira is scheduled to deliver the 7th International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Raffles Lecture in Singapore. His lecture is titled “Brazil’s global strategy in a changing world”.
