Lok Sabha Speaker, Shri Om Birla, hails the 1st P20 Summit hosted by India as a monumental success, emphasizing record-breaking participation and global consensus on key declarations.

In a historic moment for global diplomacy, India’s Lok Sabha Speaker, Shri Om Birla, announced that the 1st P20 Summit hosted by India has emerged as the most successful gathering of its kind. Speaking at a press conference held at the Parliament premises, Shri Birla revealed that out of the 37 invited countries, 36 participated in the summit, marking an unprecedented level of engagement. This inclusive event saw 436 delegates, including 48 Members of Parliament, alongside leaders of delegations from 29 nations converging to deliberate on pressing global issues.

In line with India’s G20 Presidency theme, “Parliaments for One Earth, One Family, One Future,” the summit, hosted at the India International Convention Centre, Dwarka, garnered widespread praise for its commitment to collective action. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the summit, underscoring India’s significance as a beacon of democracy. Preceding the two-day summit, a Parliamentary Forum on Mission LiFE convened on October 12, 2023, setting the stage for comprehensive discussions on sustainable development.

One of the summit’s notable achievements was the unanimous consensus on the Joint Declaration, a testament to India’s leadership on the global stage. This milestone mirrors a similar achievement at the G20 Leaders’ Summit, showcasing India’s resolute commitment to collaborative progress.

Shri Birla reiterated India’s staunch condemnation of terrorism in all its forms, emphasizing the critical role of global unity in overcoming this menace. He stressed that eradicating terrorism is paramount for global peace and prosperity.

The summit also witnessed a resounding call for responsible Artificial Intelligence development and heightened data security. Participants recognized the pivotal role of digital platforms in catalyzing socio-economic transformations and acknowledged their potential to enhance service delivery and innovation.

To bolster legislative drafting expertise, the P20 countries collectively decided to establish a knowledge-sharing group, amplifying their capacity in this critical domain.

The summit’s endorsement of the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Bill 2023’ demonstrated a collective commitment to fostering women-led development, aligning with Prime Minister’s visionary agenda.

Shri Birla underscored climate change as a paramount challenge and lauded India’s proactive measures to combat this existential threat. The discussion on the ‘Lifestyle for Environment’ (LiFE) initiative, championed by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, ignited a global conversation on sustainable living. As a result, a special discussion on Mission LiFE will now unfold in Parliaments across all G20 countries, heralding a united front in safeguarding our planet.
