Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim engaged in a Q&A session during the 10th Singapore-Malaysia Leaders Retreat Joint Press Conference on October 30, 2023. Various topics were addressed, including land connectivity and outstanding bilateral issues.
One prominent issue discussed was the Causeway, which has served as a crucial link between Singapore and Malaysia for a century. PM Lee highlighted the importance of maximizing its capacity, emphasizing that improvements should extend beyond physical expansion. Efforts on both sides, including enhancements at the Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) facilities in Malaysia, were noted. PM Lee also revealed plans for long-term redevelopment and expansion of the CIQ on the Singaporean side to accommodate larger volumes and expedite the flow of traffic.
Regarding the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zones (SEZ), PM Lee underlined ongoing feasibility studies to identify priority areas for development. Preliminary discussions included measures to streamline the movement of goods and people across the border, as well as strategies to bolster the economic ecosystem in both Iskandar and Singapore.
PM Anwar Ibrahim addressed the commitment to resolve outstanding bilateral issues. He acknowledged the need for expeditious progress, and both leaders expressed their determination to work together towards comprehensive solutions. They emphasized the importance of building mutual trust and confidence in order to address these complex issues effectively.
Lastly, the leaders touched upon their respective stances on the Middle East conflict, affirming that their positions would not hinder the strong bilateral relations between Singapore and Malaysia. PM Lee reiterated Singapore’s condemnation of the violence and advocated for a negotiated two-state solution.
