Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat emphasizes the importance of sustainability efforts in Singapore at the EuroCham Sustainability Awards 2023

DEPUTY Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat addressed the EuroCham Sustainability Awards 2023, underscoring the pivotal role of sustainability efforts in Singapore. Among the distinguished guests at the event, held on 2nd November 2023 are H.E. Iwona Piórko, Ambassador of the European Union to Singapore, and Mr Jens Rüebbert, President of the European Chamber of Commerce, Singapore. DPM Heng in his speech commended the winning companies and organizations for their exceptional contributions to sustainability in the region. DPM Heng Swee Keat also highlighted the longstanding partnership between the European Union and Singapore, emphasizing their shared commitment to an open, integrated global economic system. DPM Heng also acknowledged the significant investments made by European companies, such as Siemens and Safran, in Singapore’s early years of independence, which played a crucial role in job creation and skills development.

A panel of sustainability experts evaluated 34 nominations in categories aligning with the strategic goals of both the European Union (EU) Commission’s European Green Deal and Singapore’s Green Plan 2030. The winners:

– ESG Investments – Nanyang Technological University
– Sustainable Business Innovation – Delivery Hero (Singapore)
– Social Sustainability – BASF South East Asia Pte Ltd
– Sustainable Transportation & Logistics – DHL Express Singapore Pte Ltd

DPM Heng Swee Keat further outlined Singapore’s ambitious goals for sustainability, including achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. He detailed the Singapore Green Plan 2030, which outlines concrete targets for sustainable development across various sectors. The Deputy Prime Minister also discussed Singapore’s efforts in carbon pricing, urban solutions, and the adoption of low-carbon technologies. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of the private sector’s involvement in achieving sustainability goals, particularly through initiatives like carbon markets and transition finance.

DPM Heng Swee Keat concluded by commending the finalists of the EuroCham Sustainability Awards 2023, recognizing them as exemplars of sustainable business practices. He encouraged continued collaboration between Europe and Singapore to create inclusive and sustainable growth for both regions.
