The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) successfully wrap up their fifth joint Search-and-Rescue Exercise, enhancing bilateral cooperation
THE Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) concluded their fifth annual Bilateral Search-and-Rescue Exercise (SAREX) MALSING on November 10, 2023, hosted at Sembawang Air Base, Singapore. The exercise, held from November 6 to 10, aimed to strengthen the collaboration between the two Air Forces in responding to simulated aerial emergencies.
This year’s edition featured the participation of RSAF’s H225M and RMAF’s EC725 helicopters, along with their Search-and-Rescue (SAR) aircrew and groundcrew. The five-day exercise focused on planning and executing a joint aerial SAR operation, responding to a simulated aerial mishap off the southern coast of Singapore. Activities included aerial searches for survivors and the expedited evacuation of simulated casualties for immediate medical attention.
The exercise served to reinforce established procedures for joint SAR operations, fostering professional interaction, and building mutual trust between RSAF and RMAF participants. The closing ceremony, co-officiated by Chief of Air Force of the RSAF, Major-General Kelvin Khong, and Chief of the RMAF, General Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Mohd Asghar Khan bin Goriman Khan, highlighted the enduring nature of the defense relationship.
Major-General Kelvin Khong emphasized, “The relationship between the RSAF and the RMAF will continue beyond the exercise,” pointing to various ongoing interactions such as the Five Power Defence Arrangements exercises and Senior and Junior Officer’s Exchange Programmes.
General Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Mohd Asghar Khan bin Goriman Khan echoed this sentiment, stating, “SAREX MALSING is a testament to our unwavering commitment to this shared responsibility” of protecting and serving the region’s inhabitants.
Since its inception in 2018, SAREX MALSING has been a vital platform for enhancing professionalism and defense relations between the RSAF and RMAF. Regular interactions, including bilateral visits, professional exchanges, and participation in multilateral activities under the ambit of the Five Power Defence Arrangements, further contribute to fostering closer rapport and cooperation amongst personnel.
