Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong represents Singapore at the 34th APEC Ministerial Meeting, focusing on promoting trade resilience, sustainability, and digital innovation in the Asia-Pacific region.
Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong participated in the 34th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ministerial Meeting held in San Francisco from November 14 to 15, 2023. The meeting, chaired by United States Secretary of State Anthony J. Blinken and United States Trade Representative Ambassador Katherine Tai, brought together Ministers from the 21 APEC economies.
Under the theme of “Creating a Resilient and Sustainable Future for All,” the APEC Ministers affirmed their commitment to fostering a more interconnected, innovative, and inclusive region. The focus areas included the establishment of a fair and open trade environment, building a climate-resilient global economy, and advancing the digital economy. Additionally, the Ministers underscored their dedication to enhancing opportunities for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to integrate into global value chains.
Minister Gan emphasized the significance of the rules-based multilateral trading system, which has contributed to the predictability and stability of global trade. He highlighted Singapore’s commitment to addressing emerging global trade challenges and expressed confidence in APEC economies working collectively. Minister Gan stated, “Singapore will play its part by advancing cooperation with our trading partners in the green and digital economies, empowering our people with the necessary skills to thrive in these new domains. I am confident in the collective effort of APEC economies to advance more sustainable and inclusive growth.”
On the sidelines of the APEC Ministerial Meeting, Minister Gan also participated in the World Economic Forum AI Summit, engaged in bilateral discussions with counterparts, and officiated the opening of BLOCK71 Silicon Valley.
