Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong commends the collaborative effort behind the official launch of SAFRA Choa Chu Kang, recognizing its significance for residents in the North-West region

Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong graced the Official Launch Ceremony of SAFRA Choa Chu Kang on November 23, 2023. Joined by Dr. Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Defence and Chairman of SAFRA Board of Governors, SAFRA Chairman of Choa Chu Kang Development Committee LTC(NS) Andy Tan, SAFRA CEO Edward Leong, parliamentary colleagues, and distinguished guests, DPM Wong expressed his delight at the inauguration of the facility.

The journey to establish SAFRA Choa Chu Kang began around a decade ago when the need for a club facility in this part of Singapore was identified. DPM Wong acknowledged the crucial support from MINDEF, SAF, and SAFRA leadership, as well as local advisors Gan Kim Yong and Zaqy Mohammed, who played a vital role in finding suitable land for the development. He extended special recognition to NParks for their support, emphasizing the innovative park connector solutions that enhance connectivity in the region.

The ceremony applauded the concerted efforts of various government agencies, SAFRA management and staff, and SAFRA volunteers, particularly the SAFRA Choa Chu Kang development committee led by LTC(NS) Andy Tan. Despite construction challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the committee worked tirelessly to set new standards for SAFRA projects, incorporating sustainable features like solar panels and a rain harvesting system.

Since its soft launch in June, SAFRA Choa Chu Kang has witnessed over 700,000 visitors, hosting numerous community events with overwhelmingly positive feedback. DPM Wong highlighted the role of SAFRA in providing quality facilities for NSmen and their families across Singapore, acknowledging the evolving expectations and lifestyles of Singaporeans. He emphasized the unique camaraderie among NSmen, which SAFRA fosters through its facilities.

As the geopolitical landscape becomes more uncertain, DPM Wong stressed the importance of a strong SAF and sustained commitment to National Service. He assured continued government efforts to appreciate and recognize NSmen, with SAFRA playing a crucial role in this initiative. DPM Wong encouraged young NSmen to actively contribute to SAFRA, ensuring its continued growth and relevance in nation-building.

In conclusion, DPM Wong expressed confidence that the collaborative efforts of SAFRA, its volunteers, and NSmen will find innovative ways to show gratitude, strengthen commitment to National Service, and uphold Singapore’s safety and security.
