Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong leads a Singaporean delegation to Negara Brunei Darussalam for the 9th Singapore-Brunei Young Leaders’ Programme, fostering stronger diplomatic relations

DEPUTY Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong led a delegation of Singaporean political office-holders on an official visit to Negara Brunei Darussalam from 11th to 14th December 2023. The purpose of the visit is to participate in the 9th Singapore-Brunei Young Leaders’ Programme (YLP), fostering cooperation and understanding between the two nations.

During the visit, Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and the delegation were granted an audience with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam. DPM Lawrence Wong expressed gratitude for the steadfast support of His Majesty, particularly as the countries approach the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year. Both parties affirmed their shared commitment to elevating the bilateral relationship to new heights.

Further strengthening diplomatic ties, DPM Lawrence Wong and the delegation also met with His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office of Negara Brunei Darussalam, and Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah. Discussions highlighted the excellent state of bilateral relations, with a mutual agreement to deepen exchanges and cooperation in emerging areas of shared interest. The importance of the Young Leaders’ Programme platform in fostering connections among the younger generation of leaders from both nations was emphasized.

The visit included a welcome dinner hosted by Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Defence II Pehin Halbi Yussof, and Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Amin Liew. The dinner provided an opportunity for a comprehensive discussion on regional and global developments, as well as the exploration of avenues for closer collaboration between Singapore and Brunei in the face of an increasingly uncertain world.
