The Singapore Registry of Ships (SRS) achieves a significant milestone by crossing 100 million gross tonnage, reinforcing its position as a leading global ship registry.
The Singapore Registry of Ships (SRS) has marked a historic achievement by surpassing the 100 million gross tonnage (GT) milestone. This milestone was reached with the registration of AET’s Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC), Eagle Veracruz, on January 23, 2024. Administered by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the SRS stands as one of the world’s top-quality ship registries.
Established in 1966, the SRS plays a crucial role in overseeing Singapore-flagged ships, ensuring their compliance with relevant International Maritime Organization (IMO) conventions. This oversight aims to enhance the safety, efficiency, and environmental protection of international shipping. With approximately 4,000 vessels totaling over 100 million gross tonnage, the SRS ranks among the world’s largest ship registries, boasting one of the youngest and highest-quality fleets.
Over the years, the SRS has built a reputation for being a quality registry, contributing to the growing popularity of the Singapore flag among shipowners and operators. By serving as a flag of choice, the SRS contributes to Singapore’s value as an international maritime center, fostering collaboration with top shipping groups globally and representing the interests of the maritime community.
The recently registered Eagle Veracruz, a Very Large Crude Carrier, showcases advanced technology with a dual-fuelled liquefied natural gas system. This vessel, named after the Mexican State of Veracruz, boasts energy-efficient design features, including an optimized hull form, enhanced rudder design, and wake duct, all contributing to reduced fuel consumption. Notably, the modular concept of the main engine allows for potential future retrofit options to run on low- and zero-carbon fuels.
Looking towards the future, the SRS is dedicated to promoting green and digital shipping. As of the end of 2023, the total tonnage of ships under the SRS reached 99.6 million GT. In 2023, 22 newly Singapore-registered ships received Green Ship Certificates under the Green Ship Programme. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) anticipates a growing number of environmentally conscious ships choosing Singapore as their flag of choice. MPA commits to collaborating with shipping companies, encouraging the adoption of low- and zero-carbon fuels, and promoting energy-efficient technology and designs across their fleets.
