The International Energy Agency (IEA) announces its first overseas office in Singapore, aiming to boost Southeast Asia’s energy transition efforts.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has announced plans to establish its first overseas Regional Cooperation Centre in Singapore. This announcement was made during the IEA’s 50th Anniversary and Ministerial Meeting in Paris, France, by IEA Executive Director Dr. Fatih Birol. This initiative marks a significant milestone, being the IEA’s first expansion outside of Paris since its inception in 1974 and Singapore’s inaugural hosting of an International Organisation office in the energy sector.

The new Centre, expected to commence operations in the second half of 2024, will function as a pivotal hub for the IEA’s activities and engagements across the Asia-Pacific region. It aims to provide policy guidance, technical support, and capacity-building measures to facilitate the energy transition in Southeast Asia and beyond. Dr. Birol expressed confidence in the Centre’s potential to positively impact the region’s energy landscape through various initiatives.

The establishment of the Centre follows years of close collaboration between the IEA and Singapore, underscoring their mutual commitment to supporting sustainable energy transition efforts in the region. The signing of the host country agreement with Mathias Cormann, Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), further solidifies this partnership and the shared vision for a more sustainable and energy-efficient future in the Asia-Pacific.
