DPM Heng Swee Keat emphasized the significance of space technology in addressing global challenges and driving future progress during the Global Space and Technology Convention held on 15 February 2024.
Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies Heng Swee Keat delivered a keynote speech at the Global Space and Technology Convention 2024, which took place on 15 February 2024. The event was attended by notable figures including Mr Jeremy Chan, Chairman of Singapore Space and Technology Limited, and Mr Peter Ho, Chairman of the Office for Space Technology and Industry, Singapore, along with international guests and experts in the space industry.
DPM Heng Swee Keat opened his speech by welcoming attendees and highlighting the human fascination with space, which has driven significant advancements in space-based technologies, making our lives on Earth more connected and efficient. He pointed out the growing global space sector’s value, projected to exceed US$1 trillion by 2030, and Singapore’s contributions through launching over 30 satellites to date.
The convention’s theme, “Space for a sustainable, smart, and secure world,” set the tone for discussions on harnessing space technology to tackle challenges like climate change, improve global transportation and logistics, and promote sustainable development. DPM Heng proposed three strategies to maximize the benefits of space technology: identifying impactful niches for research and innovation, building a diverse talent pool, and fostering cross-border collaborations.
Highlighting Singapore’s active role in international space collaborations and its vibrant ecosystem of space professionals and researchers, DPM Heng encouraged partnerships with Singapore-based companies and institutions to leverage space technology for global good. He concluded with a call for continued dialogue and cooperation within the space sector to explore new frontiers and address shared challenges.
