On 14 March 2024, in a formal ceremony at the Istana, Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam received credentials from distinguished foreign envoys, signaling a continuation and strengthening of diplomatic ties. The event highlighted the presentation of credentials by the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Thailand, Her Excellency Ureerat Chareontoh, and the High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus, His Excellency Nicholas Panayiotou, in separate ceremonies.

Her Excellency Ureerat Chareontoh, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Thailand to the Republic of Singapore, brings over three decades of experience from the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). A graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Chulalongkorn University and a Master of Arts in International Development from The American University, USA, Ambassador Chareontoh has a rich background in diplomacy and international relations.
Starting her diplomatic career in 1990 as an Attache in the News Division of the Department of Information at the Thai MFA, she quickly rose through the ranks. Her journey saw her serving as Third and Second Secretary in the Department of American and South Pacific Affairs and the Department of International Organisations, followed by a position as First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Thailand to the United Nations in New York. She also held significant roles in the Department of East Asian Affairs and most recently served as the Director-General of the Thailand International Cooperation Agency.
Ambassador Chareontoh’s career is marked by key diplomatic positions across the globe, including Jakarta, Beijing, Ho Chi Minh City, and Prague. Notably, she served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Thailand to the Czech Republic from 2018 to 2020, demonstrating her extensive diplomatic experience and commitment to fostering international relations.

HIGH COMMISSIONER TO SINGAPORE

His Excellency Nicholas Panayiotou, serving as the High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus to the Republic of Singapore, is recognized for his longstanding career in diplomacy. Currently, he also holds the position of Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to the Republic of Indonesia, with concurrent accreditation as High Commissioner to Singapore.
Prior to his current role, High Commissioner Panayiotou contributed significantly as Cyprus’s Deputy Representative to the EU’s Political and Security Committee in Brussels. His diplomatic journey also includes assignments in Paris and The Hague, as well as various capacities within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, including as Director of the Office of the Permanent Secretary.
Educated at the London School of Economics and Political Science with a Bachelor of Science in Government and holding a Master of Arts in Cultural Studies from Birkbeck College, London, High Commissioner Panayiotou is fluent in Greek, English, and French. His diverse educational background and multilingual capabilities reflect the breadth of his diplomatic expertise and his ability to navigate complex international landscapes.
The credential presentation ceremony underscores the ongoing commitment to diplomatic engagement and cooperation between Singapore and both Thailand and Cyprus, highlighting the important role of these envoys in facilitating and strengthening international relations.
