In-depth Discussions on Peace, Humanitarian Efforts, and Regional Stability Mark the Visit
From 19 to 20 March 2024, Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, embarked on a working visit to Israel, holding meetings with key Israeli leaders, including President Isaac Herzog, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Minister of Foreign Affairs Israel Katz, Minister Benny Gantz, and former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.
Minister Balakrishnan conveyed Singapore’s condolences for the lives affected by the Hamas attacks on 7 October 2023, strongly condemning the acts of terror and advocating for the immediate and unconditional release of all civilian hostages from Gaza. The discussions with Israeli officials also addressed Singapore’s concerns over the humanitarian situation in Gaza, with Minister Balakrishnan urging for an immediate ceasefire to facilitate the delivery of aid to the region, emphasizing collaboration with Jordan and Israel for humanitarian missions.
Critically, Minister Balakrishnan highlighted concerns over the extent of Israel’s military operations in Gaza, calling for enhanced measures to safeguard civilian lives and welfare. He reiterated Singapore’s support for a negotiated two-state solution, aligned with United Nations Security Council resolutions, as the fundamental pathway towards achieving lasting peace and justice between Israelis and Palestinians.
The visit also included engagements with members of Israel’s Knesset from various political parties, fostering dialogue across the spectrum. Minister Balakrishnan’s departure to the United Arab Emirates marks the continuation of his diplomatic engagements in the region.
