During a pivotal two-day visit to Berlin on 8th and 9th April 2024, Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Lawrence Wong, engaged in productive discussions with top German officials, aiming to deepen the ties between Singapore and Germany. The visit included meetings with Federal President Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Robert Habeck, highlighting the commitment of both nations to strengthen their partnership in various domains.

On 8th April 2024, Deputy Prime Minister Wong and Federal President Steinmeier discussed the solid and warm relationship between the two countries, exploring avenues to further enhance cooperation. They focused on navigating the complexities of the global landscape, emphasizing the shared values of multilateralism and a rules-based world order.

The following day, discussions with Federal Chancellor Scholz revolved around the long-standing and multifaceted bilateral ties between Singapore and Germany. Both leaders expressed their dedication to intensifying cooperation across various sectors, agreeing to work towards elevating their relationship to a Strategic Partnership. They also exchanged views on regional and international matters, showcasing their commitment to addressing global challenges together.

The meeting with Vice-Chancellor Habeck on 9th April underscored the growing economic relations between Singapore and Germany. Both parties welcomed Germany’s interest in expanding cooperation with the region and discussed opportunities to strengthen economic ties between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the European Union (EU), marking a significant step towards fostering closer inter-regional collaboration.
