Singapore and France Mark a Milestone in Bilateral Relations with New Office and Upcoming 60th Anniversary
On April 10, 2024, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance of Singapore, Lawrence Wong, spoke at the inauguration of the new Temasek Holdings office in Paris. This event not only celebrated Temasek’s expansion but also its 50th anniversary, highlighting the investment firm’s significant growth and global reach.
DPM Wong, during his address, underscored the importance of the new office opening, coinciding with the 50th year of Temasek, against the backdrop of Singapore’s own growth story. He noted the strategic significance of this new establishment in Paris, originally built for the 1900 Exposition Universelle, emphasizing its relevance as a venue that symbolizes global unity and exchange.
He reflected on the current global challenges, including the return of great power politics and the need for increased resilience and national security over economic efficiency. Despite these challenges, DPM Wong highlighted the opportunities that still exist worldwide, particularly in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. He pointed out that Asia, with its dynamic economies like China and India and the vibrant ASEAN region, continues to be a significant narrative in global economic growth.
The speech also delved into the deepening bilateral relations between Singapore and France, covering diverse areas from defence and innovation to culture and education. DPM Wong noted the strong people-to-people ties and the mutual appreciation of cultural and economic contributions that enrich this relationship.
The event reflects Singapore’s strategic position as a connector between Asia and the rest of the world, a role that DPM Wong remarked is increasingly vital in today’s fragmented global landscape. He expressed enthusiasm about the future of Singapore’s relationship with France, particularly as both nations approach the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic ties, looking forward to strengthening and deepening these connections.
