Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization, visited Singapore to engage in key discussions and events aimed at advancing global maritime interests.
From April 15 to 19, 2024, Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), was in Singapore under the Ministry of Transport’s Distinguished Visitors’ Programme (DVP). His visit coincided with the Singapore Maritime Week (SMW), hosted by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).
During his stay, Mr. Dominguez met with Mr. Chee Hong Tat, Singapore’s Minister for Transport, to discuss opportunities for the IMO and Singapore to enhance their collaboration. Key topics included promoting navigational safety, advancing digitalization, supporting decarbonization efforts, and fostering the development of maritime human resources. Additionally, he had a meeting with Mr. Teo Eng Dih, Chief Executive of the MPA, focusing on strengthening the IMO-MPA partnership, especially in the areas of green and digital transformation in the maritime sector, and the training and upskilling of seafarers.
Mr. Dominguez participated in several pivotal events during the week. He delivered speeches at the Singapore Maritime Lecture and the opening of the Accelerating Digitalisation and Decarbonisation Conference. These platforms provided opportunities for him to share insights with global leaders on pushing forward sustainable practices in the maritime industry.
Furthermore, Mr. Dominguez toured the Expo@SMW, engaging with maritime startups and companies that are at the forefront of pioneering green fuels and technologies. His visit also included engagements with various media through a Media Fireside Chat, where he discussed his vision and the ongoing projects under the IMO.
Key visits included the PSA and the Singapore Maritime Academy Training Centre, where he observed state-of-the-art facilities and training programs that contribute to the advancement of the maritime workforce. He also participated in safety drills aboard the ammonia-powered vessel Fortescue Green Pioneer, marking a significant milestone in the use of ammonia as a marine fuel.
