Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Huang Clan Association in Singapore on 13 July 2024, emphasizing the organization’s historical significance and ongoing role in preserving culture and supporting the community.

Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong delivered a speech at the centennial celebration of the Huangshi Zonghui (Huang Clan Association) in Singapore. The event marked a significant milestone for one of the few organizations in Singapore with a history spanning a century.

PM Wong commenced his speech by welcoming attendees, including numerous overseas guests from the global Huang Clan community. He highlighted the importance of this celebration, noting the rarity of organizations reaching a 100-year milestone in Singapore.

Reflecting on the past, PM Wong spoke about the vibrant history and rich cultural heritage of the Huang Clan. He praised the association’s efforts in preserving this heritage and adapting to modern times by engaging the younger generation through mentorship, education, and leadership development programs. This proactive approach ensures the continuity and future success of the Huang Clan.

The Prime Minister also underscored the vital role clan associations play in Singapore. Historically, these organizations provided essential support to early immigrants, assisting with housing, employment, and education. Despite changes in modern Singapore, PM Wong affirmed that clan associations remain crucial for preserving cultural values, fostering community ties, and aiding new immigrants in integrating into society.

Additionally, PM Wong commended the ongoing community support provided by the Huang Clan, including scholarships and aid for disadvantaged groups. He emphasized that the personal connections and cultural warmth offered by clan associations complement governmental efforts and are vital for a cohesive society.

Concluding his speech, PM Wong reiterated the importance of leadership renewal within clan associations to maintain their vitality and relevance. He assured continued governmental support through initiatives like the Chinese Community Liaison Group, aimed at strengthening ties between the government and the Chinese community.
