At the opening ceremony of the Singapore Sustainability Academy (SSA) Annex on July 25, 2024, Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat addressed the pressing need for climate action and highlighted Singapore’s efforts in sustainable development. He commended CDL for its role in promoting sustainability and stressed the importance of partnerships to achieve climate goals.

DPM Heng noted the significant strides made since the Paris Agreement, particularly in renewable energy and decarbonization efforts by various industries. However, he pointed out the urgency to act faster, referencing the latest IPCC report which calls for a 43% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

He discussed Singapore’s vulnerability to climate change, citing rising temperatures and sea levels as critical concerns. Singapore aims to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, supported by policies like the carbon tax and the Singapore Green Plan 2030. DPM Heng also mentioned the new CREATE Thematic Programme in Decarbonisation launched by the National Research Foundation.

The SSA Annex aims to foster partnerships and collective action, with DPM Heng encouraging stakeholders to innovate and contribute to Singapore’s sustainability agenda. He highlighted the SSA’s role in raising public awareness, supporting corporate transformation, and developing green solutions.
