Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat commends the Singapore Expo for its contributions to the MICE sector and outlines future growth strategies at its 25th anniversary celebration.

Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat delivered a keynote speech at the Singapore Expo’s 25th anniversary celebration on July 30, 2024. Joined by Minister Dr. Maliki Osman, Senior Minister of State Desmond Tan, Constellar Chairman Robin Hu, and Constellar Group CEO Chua Wee Phong, DPM Heng highlighted the Expo’s pivotal role in Singapore’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector.

Reflecting on the Expo’s history since its opening in 1999, DPM Heng praised its support during significant moments, from hosting world-famous artists to serving as a transitional care facility during the COVID-19 pandemic. He emphasized the Expo’s contribution to Singapore’s reputation as a leading MICE venue in Asia and globally, noting the resilience and strong rebound of the sector post-pandemic.

DPM Heng shared that business and MICE travelers accounted for 15% of Singapore’s foreign visitors in 2023, an increase from 13% in 2019. He commended the Expo for hosting over 300 events annually and emphasized the sector’s role in driving economic and social vibrancy.

Highlighting the importance of experiential excellence, sustainability, and talent development, DPM Heng outlined three strategies for the MICE sector’s future growth:

  1. Reimagine Experiences through Versatile Spaces: DPM Heng encouraged the MICE sector to use technology creatively to enhance event experiences. He cited the newly-refurbished Arena@EXPO, which offers plug-and-play capabilities and flexible floor space, as an example of innovative space utilization.
  2. Embrace Sustainability as a Competitive Advantage: He urged the MICE sector to adopt sustainable practices to reduce emissions and waste. DPM Heng applauded the Singapore Expo for completing the largest single-site solar rooftop installation in Singapore, offsetting 5,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. He also highlighted the Singapore MICE Sustainability Roadmap and the Expo’s attainment of the Singapore MICE Sustainability Certification – Gold.
  3. Nurture Cutting-Edge Talent: DPM Heng stressed the importance of upskilling the MICE workforce to provide excellent service. He welcomed the Memorandum of Understanding between the Singapore Expo and NTUC LearningHub, which aims to train MICE workers in service excellence and communication.

DPM Heng concluded by encouraging the Singapore Expo to continue fostering connections and creating impactful experiences as it evolves into a “Playground of Possibilities.” He congratulated the Expo on its 25th anniversary and wished it many more successful years ahead.
