During President Tharman Shanmugaratnam’s State Visit to the Philippines, two new MOUs were signed, further enhancing bilateral relations, particularly in healthcare and environmental initiatives
The Philippines and Singapore have reinforced their strong bilateral relationship with the signing of two new Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) during the State Visit of Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam to the Philippines from August 15th to 17th, 2024. These MOUs focus on the deployment of Filipino healthcare workers and the development of carbon credits, further building on a prior agreement on defence cooperation signed in July 2024 between the Philippine Department of National Defense (DND) and Singapore’s Ministry of Defence (MINDEF).
During their bilateral meeting held on August 15th, 2024, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr, and President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, conveyed their satisfaction with the progress of relations between the two countries. President Marcos remarked that Philippine-Singapore relations have undergone “immense transformation” over the past five decades and have evolved into a strong, multi-faceted partnership.
President Tharman highlighted Singapore’s commitment to being a long-term partner in the Philippines’ development, across various sectors. He emphasised Singapore’s ongoing dedication to supporting this partnership through continued investments by Singaporean companies, sharing expertise, and learning from the Philippines’ strategies in tackling complex issues, including environmental challenges.
