Pope Francis’s visit to Singapore included multiple key locations, a significant delegation, and extensive volunteer support
Singapore, September 12th, 2024 — Pope Francis’s visit to Singapore involved several key events and locations. From September 9th to 15th, 2024, the Holy Father visited seven notable sites, including Singapore Changi Airport, Parliament House, the National University of Singapore’s University Cultural Centre, National Stadium, St Theresa’s Home, Catholic Junior College, and the St Francis Xavier Retreat Centre.
The papal delegation comprised 80 members, including Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Pro-prefect for the Dicastery for Evangelisation, and Cardinal William Goh, who joined upon the Pope’s arrival in Singapore. The delegation also included personal security and various Vatican State ministers.
Throughout the visit, approximately 3,000 individuals were expected to meet Pope Francis at different events. This included 1,000 at the community welcome at Changi Airport, attendees at the NUS University Cultural Centre, residents at St Theresa’s Home, and interreligious youth and leaders at Catholic Junior College.
The Papal Mass, held at the National Stadium, attracted 50,000 attendees. Among them were 2,600 students, 310 migrants, 1,000 elderly parishioners, and 3,000 Catholics from Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC) countries. The Mass was celebrated by 280 priests and 50 bishops and cardinals.
The visit was supported by 5,000 volunteers, including 1,600 choir members, 390 Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, 656 wardens, 300 altar servers, 128 medics and nurses, and 260 crowd control personnel. The planning for this extensive event began in February 2024, involving two co-chairpersons and various committees.
