Historic agreement addresses global challenges, from digital cooperation to climate change and peace

Singapore, 24th September 2024 – World leaders adopted the Pact for the Future on September 22nd, 2024, at the UN’s Summit of the Future in New York. This landmark agreement includes a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations, marking the culmination of a years-long process to adapt international cooperation to the challenges of the modern world.

The Pact addresses peace and security, digital cooperation, sustainable development, and human rights and gender. It aims to reform international institutions to better represent today’s realities and future challenges. United Nations Secretary-General emphasised that the global system must evolve to meet the needs of future generations.

During the summit, the President of the General Assembly noted that the Pact would lay the foundation for a sustainable and peaceful global order. The agreement also covers topics such as climate change, nuclear disarmament, and space governance, demonstrating a renewed commitment to multilateralism.

The summit attracted over 4,000 participants, including Heads of State, observers, and representatives from civil society. Preceding the formal Summit, Action Days from September 20th – 21st involved over 7,000 participants and resulted in pledges totaling USD 1.05 billion to support digital inclusion.
