HFSE International School in Singapore marks Science Week with activities supporting marine conservation, in line with the Philippines’ national observance of MANA Mo this September.

SINGAPORE, 1 October 2024 – Primary and secondary students from HFSE International School, a Filipino-run institution in Singapore, actively participated in the Philippines’ observance of the Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (MANA Mo) this September. The event coincided with the school’s annual Science Week, further supporting the Philippine Embassy’s call to promote the MANA Mo campaign.

HFSE International School organized a series of activities aimed at raising students’ awareness of marine conservation and the importance of protecting the ocean. As part of the program, a film showcasing the Philippines’ rich marine biodiversity was screened, highlighting sustainable marine resource use and the threats posed by activities such as overfishing, pollution, and habitat destruction. Following the film, students engaged in a thoughtful discussion, sharing their reflections on how they could contribute to marine protection, with suggestions such as participating in coastal clean-ups and advocating against illegal fishing practices like dynamite fishing.

In addition to the film screening, students are set to participate in slogan-making and poem-writing contests, further reinforcing their understanding of marine conservation.

The Philippine Embassy expressed its gratitude to HFSE for its involvement in the national MANA Mo observance, which is held every September following Presidential Proclamation 316, signed by President Rodrigo Duterte on 14 September 2017. This year’s theme is “Pamana ng Karagatan: Para sa Kinabukasan, Ating Ingatan.”

“Education is the best weapon we can provide our children. Let us continue to teach them and encourage them to use their voice for a better and sustainable tomorrow,” said Ambassador Medardo Macaraig.
