Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen acknowledges the efforts of 387 volunteers serving on 39 MINDEF boards and committees during the annual MINDEF Volunteers’ Dinner.
On October 6, 2024, Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen hosted the annual Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) Volunteers’ Dinner to honor the significant contributions, support, and commitment of 387 volunteers who serve on 39 boards and committees within MINDEF. During the event, Dr Ng presented certificates of appointment and re-appointment to 80 volunteers in recognition of their dedicated service.
Held annually since 1998, the MINDEF Volunteers’ Dinner celebrates the vital role that volunteers play in supporting MINDEF and the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). In his speech, Dr Ng expressed his gratitude for the volunteers’ valuable contributions, emphasizing their pivotal role in maintaining public trust in Singapore’s defense system. He highlighted the impact of their work, stating, “Because of your efforts, they trust that MINDEF, the SAF, and the Government will do a good job in building a strong defence; they trust that their sons will be well taken care of and can train safely; they trust that their feedback and efforts as employers and the community are appreciated.”
Dr Ng also addressed the importance of not taking anything for granted in a volatile global security landscape. He shared that despite the challenges, there are positive remarks from foreign dignitaries on Singapore’s defense system. While these commendations are appreciated, Dr Ng noted that Singapore remains vigilant and aware of potential risks, acknowledging that as a small country, preparedness is critical.
The volunteers serving on the various boards and committees are industry experts from both private and public sectors, spanning diverse fields such as law, medicine, counseling, engineering, science, and strategic communications. Their expertise allows MINDEF to adopt best practices and improve organizational processes. Moreover, through their extensive professional networks, these volunteers serve as a bridge between MINDEF and the public, promoting defense awareness and supporting National Service.
Senior Ministers of State for Defence Mr Heng Chee How and Mr Zaqy Mohamad, as well as senior officials from MINDEF and the SAF, also attended the dinner to show their appreciation for the volunteers’ contributions.
