
Strengthening Bilateral Ties Through Trade, Culture, and Innovation
Singapore, 24 February 2025 – The High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Singapore, H.E. Senarath Dissanayake, and Mrs. Dissanayake hosted a reception at Shangri-La Singapore to commemorate Sri Lanka’s 77th Independence Day and 55 years of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Singapore. The event, attended by dignitaries, government officials, and business leaders, featured a cultural performance celebrating the rich traditions of Sri Lanka.

In his address, H.E. Senarath Dissanayake highlighted the resilience of Sri Lanka in overcoming economic challenges and emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral ties with Singapore. “Sri Lanka and Singapore share a long-standing partnership built on shared values, historical ties, and people-to-people connections. As we advance our economic recovery, we invite Singaporean businesses to explore new investment opportunities in our growing market,” he stated. He also acknowledged His Excellency Dr. Janil Puthucheary, Senior Minister of State at the Ministry of Digital Development and Information, as the Guest of Honour for the evening.

Dr. Puthucheary, representing the Government of Singapore, reiterated the strong historical ties and economic partnerships between the two nations. “Singapore and Sri Lanka have been steadfast partners for more than half a century. Our cooperation spans trade, education, and cultural exchange, and I am confident that our relations will continue to strengthen in the decades to come,” he remarked.
The evening underscored the growing collaboration between the two nations, including trade agreements, academic exchanges, and cultural initiatives. Notably, Sri Lanka is finalizing a Memorandum of Understanding with AI Singapore on AI Governance, fostering digital innovation and knowledge-sharing. Additionally, both countries have entered a Memorandum of Understanding under Article VI of the Paris Agreement, reinforcing their commitment to sustainability.





With bilateral trade reaching USD 851 million in 2024, Singapore remains one of Sri Lanka’s top investors and trading partners. The Sri Lanka-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (SLSFTA), signed in 2018, continues to offer new opportunities for businesses. The High Commissioner expressed gratitude for Singapore’s unwavering support, particularly during economic challenges, and emphasized continued cooperation in trade, technology, education, and workforce collaborations.
The event concluded with a vibrant cultural showcase, symbolizing the rich heritage and enduring friendship between Sri Lanka and Singapore.
