The First Meeting of the Task Force on AI, Data Governance & Innovation for Sustainable Development continued into its second day on February 26, 2025. The meeting, chaired by Deputy Director-General of the Department of Communication and Digital Technologies (DCDT), Mr. A. Mashishi, brought together key government stakeholders to explore the potential of artificial intelligence and data governance in fostering sustainable development.

Representatives from the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), and DCDT participated in discussions on policy frameworks, ethical considerations, and technological advancements. The task force aims to develop strategies that leverage AI and digital innovation to promote inclusivity and economic growth while addressing governance challenges.
The meeting underscored South Africa’s commitment to responsible AI deployment and international collaboration in digital transformation. Key topics included the role of AI in public services, cross-border data governance, and strategies for integrating innovation into sustainable development goals.

The discussions are expected to contribute to national and regional policies, reinforcing South Africa’s position as a leader in AI governance and digital transformation within Africa.
