PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia — Malaysia marked Commonwealth Day 2025 on 10 March, joining 55 other nations in celebrating this year’s theme, Together We Thrive. The theme underscores the spirit of solidarity, resilience, and cooperation that defines the Commonwealth’s collective vision for sustainable development.

This year’s celebration carries special significance for Malaysia, as it coincides with the elevation of its bilateral ties with the United Kingdom to a strategic partnership. The move follows Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s working visit to the UK from 14 to 19 January 2025, where both nations pledged deeper collaboration in trade, investment, education, and defence.

“Malaysia reiterates its commitment to fostering unity, economic resilience, and sustainable growth within the Commonwealth family, for a better future for all,” the statement read.

The Together We Thrive spirit was also reflected in the establishment of the UK-Malaysia Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO), which aims to enhance bilateral trade and investment. Chaired by UK Minister for Trade Policy and Economic Security Douglas Alexander MP and Malaysian Minister for Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Zafrul Aziz, the committee is set to drive initiatives in key sectors, including legal services, education, agriculture, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Malaysia also welcomed the UK’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), which strengthens economic ties and opens new opportunities for businesses in both nations. The agreement is expected to enhance trade facilitation, reduce tariffs, and create a more dynamic investment landscape.

In his Commonwealth Day message, His Majesty King Charles III, Head of the Commonwealth, highlighted the importance of unity among member nations. “In these uncertain times, the Commonwealth’s remarkable collection of nations and peoples come together in the spirit of support and, crucially, friendship,” he said.

Malaysia reaffirmed its commitment to harnessing the Commonwealth’s strength in fostering economic cooperation, human rights, and environmental sustainability. By embracing the Together We Thrive ethos, the country aims to play a key role in shaping a more inclusive and prosperous future for all member states.
