The China Cultural Centre in Singapore marked International Women’s Day with a special reception and the grand opening of the Shanghai-Style Qipao (Cheongsam) Singapore Special Exhibition, hosted by Madam Yang Qing, Wife of the Chinese Ambassador to Singapore.

SINGAPORE, 6 March 2025 – In celebration of International Women’s Day, Madam Yang Qing, Wife of the Chinese Ambassador to Singapore, hosted a distinguished reception alongside the opening ceremony of the Shanghai-Style Qipao (Cheongsam) Singapore Special Exhibition at the China Cultural Centre. Co-hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Singapore, China Cultural Centre in Singapore, and Shanghai Haipai Qipao Cultural Promotion Association. The event brought together esteemed guests, including female ambassadors, diplomats’ spouses, and prominent figures, to honour women’s achievements and cultural heritage.

In her speech, Madam Yang Qing extended her holiday greetings to all the guests. She emphasized that women must be proud of who they are and what they do, remain independent, and leverage their strengths to contribute their wisdom and share in the development of society. At the same time, women should balance their roles in both society and family life. They should also play their unique role in family, and make sure that their family uphold fine values and traditions, so that their family can contribute to the greater harmony and development of their respective countries.

Ms. Kong Yuan, the newly appointed Director of the China Cultural Centre, welcomed the attendees and highlighted the Centre’s decade-long mission of fostering cultural exchange between China and Singapore. She appreciated her predecessor, Mr. Xiao Jianghua, and announced a series of celebrations to mark the Centre’s 10th anniversary.

Speaking at the event, Ms. Kong Yuan remarked, “The China Cultural Centre is honoured to host this celebration of women and culture. The qipao, as a brilliant gem of Eastern fashion, reflects not only our deep cultural heritage but also the grace, strength, and resilience of women. We hope this exhibition will inspire a greater appreciation of our shared traditions and the role of women in shaping them.”

The exhibition showcased the qipao, an iconic symbol of Eastern elegance, craftsmanship, and resilience. Reflecting the enduring spirit of International Women’s Day, the collection underscored this traditional attire’s timeless beauty and cultural significance.
