JAKARTA, Indonesia — Indonesia and Vietnam have agreed to elevate their bilateral relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership, following a meeting between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Secretary General of the Communist Party of Vietnam, To Lam, at Merdeka Palace on March 10, 2025.

The leaders highlighted the longstanding ties between the two nations, which were established in 1955. President Prabowo emphasized the shared historical experiences of both countries in defending their independence and sovereignty against colonialism and imperialism. He stated, “This year should be considered an excellent momentum to elevate our relationship to a higher level—to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership.”

Both countries share a common vision of achieving developed nation status by 2045. President Prabowo remarked, “We want to improve the lives of our people. We want to eliminate poverty.” He praised the resilience of the Vietnamese people and expressed Indonesia’s eagerness to enhance the relationship further.

The discussions also focused on enhancing cooperation in various sectors, including trade, investment, and defense, to ensure peace, stability, and prosperity for both nations. The leaders underscored the importance of working together to achieve these shared goals.
