Ahead of World Water Day, Changi Airport Group (CAG) reveals how its smart water-saving measures are conserving the equivalent of 24 Olympic-sized swimming pools annually.

As the world prepares to mark World Water Day, Changi Airport Group (CAG) has spotlighted its commitment to water sustainability by unveiling several key initiatives aimed at strengthening long-term water resilience at Singapore Changi Airport. Through technology upgrades and innovative recycling practices, the airport has made significant strides in reducing water usage and advancing a circular water economy within its ecosystem.

One of the major steps taken by CAG is the installation of water-efficient taps in its facilities. During a recent upgrade of airside washrooms, 172 manual taps were replaced with contactless models that dispense only 2 litres of water per minute, compared to the previous 5 litres. This single change is projected to save approximately 3,600 cubic metres of water annually.

Another breakthrough is the recovery of condensate water from six Air Handling Stations (AHS) at Terminal 2. Previously overlooked, this source of reusable water is now being channelled into the airport’s cooling systems, reducing reliance on NEWater — Singapore’s high-grade reclaimed water. The initiative is expected to save more than 60,000 cubic metres of water annually, equivalent to the volume of 24 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Innovation also extends to the treatment of water in cooling towers. At Terminal 4, the integrated Facilities Management (iFM) team has adopted an Electro-Chemical Activation (ECA) system, which replaces traditional chemical treatment methods with a more eco-friendly alternative. The system uses electrolysis to produce disinfectants and softens water by removing calcium and magnesium ions. This not only reduces chemical usage but also improves the cycles of concentration (COC), meaning less water needs to be flushed and replenished. The result: a 16% reduction in cooling tower water consumption.

CAG’s efforts are not carried out in isolation. The Group collaborates closely with stakeholders across the airport ecosystem, reinforcing its commitment to building a water-smart and sustainable Changi Airport.
