Scholars and students gathered to honour Dr Ambedkar’s legacy and explore the Indian Constitution’s artistic and legal influence
In a collaborative effort, the High Commission of India (HCI) in Singapore and the National University of Singapore (NUS) marked the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Indian Constitution with a special event held in April 2025 to coincide with Ambedkar Jayanti.

The commemorative programme featured thought-provoking talks by distinguished NUS academics. Sabarish Suresh, from the Faculty of Law, delivered a lecture on Dr B.R. Ambedkar’s instrumental role in drafting the Indian Constitution. He also highlighted its enduring global relevance and drew comparisons between the Indian and Singaporean constitutional frameworks.
Dr Priya Maholay-Jaradi, from the Department of History, presented on “The Constitution of India as Artwork and Artefact”. Her talk shed light on the artistic richness of the Constitution, focusing on the intricate calligraphy and illustrations that make the document a cultural treasure as well as a legal one.

An exhibition on the Art and Calligraphy of the Indian Constitution was also showcased, receiving warm appreciation from NUS students and faculty alike. The display offered a rare insight into the visual and historical elements embedded in the Indian Constitution’s design.
This event not only celebrated the legacy of Dr Ambedkar and India’s democratic foundation but also fostered greater academic and cultural understanding between India and Singapore.
