Nationwide celebration underscores the Kingdom’s dedication to sustainability, biodiversity, and collective climate action under Vision 2030.
Saudi Arabia has marked its second annual Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) Day, commemorating the launch of the Kingdom’s flagship environmental programme in 2021 by His Royal Highness Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince, Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Higher Committee for the Saudi Green Initiative.
Themed “Promoting a Culture of Environmental Stewardship”, SGI Day 2025 concluded a month-long campaign of community engagement and awareness efforts across the Kingdom. Designed to reinforce public and private sector collaboration, the initiative aligns with the broader goals of Saudi Vision 2030 to reduce emissions, enhance biodiversity, and accelerate sustainable development.
Throughout March, citizens, government bodies, corporations, and non-profit organisations came together to demonstrate shared responsibility for climate action. Notable campaigns included #GreenRamadan, which encouraged sustainable habits during the holy month, and #PawsToChangeChallenge, led by SGI’s mascot Namour, which inspired youth to adopt eco-friendly practices. Contributions were showcased in a live digital mosaic on SGI Day’s website, celebrating grassroots efforts to live more sustainably.
The 2025 celebration builds on the momentum from last December’s SGI Forum, held alongside the UNCCD COP16 Riyadh conference. The forum brought together policymakers, business leaders, and climate experts to discuss regional and international pathways for green transformation.
To date, SGI has driven over 85 initiatives across all 13 regions of the Kingdom with investments exceeding SAR 705 billion. Highlights include the connection of 6.6 GW of renewable energy to the grid, ongoing development of 44.2 GW, and the planting of 115 million trees. In addition, 118,000 hectares of degraded land have been rehabilitated and over 7,500 endangered animals have been rewilded through conservation programmes.
These achievements underscore Saudi Arabia’s growing leadership in environmental protection and its ambition to create a sustainable future through innovation, conservation, and inclusive action.
