Experience the timeless beauty of Indian dance-theatre as the Kathakali Festival 2025 brings epic tales to life with world-class performances and cultural immersion.
Singapore is set to come alive with colour, rhythm, and ancient storytelling as the Kathakali Festival 2025 stages its highly anticipated Mainstage Performances on 3 and 4 May 2025 at the Stamford Arts Centre Black Box. Presented in conjunction with the Singapore Heritage Festival 2025, this two-night showcase will spotlight the grandeur of Kathakali, a traditional Indian dance-theatre form renowned for its expressive storytelling, intricate makeup, and symbolic movement.
The programme begins on Saturday, 3 May, with Satyavathi Parinayam, an original piece by Kalamandalam Biju, head of the Bhaskar’s Arts Academy (BAA) Kathakali Troupe. This work, rooted in the Mahabharatha, tells the compelling tale of a fisherman’s daughter whose destiny is to become queen.
On Sunday, 4 May, the focus shifts to Dakshayagam, a stirring interpretation from the Skanda Puranam that explores divine conflict and sacrifice, tracing the tragic downfall of Sati and the wrath of Lord Shiva.
Audiences will witness mesmerising performances from renowned artists from India, including Kalamandalam Parthasaradhy and Kalarangam Gireesan, alongside Singapore-based talents such as Soneiya Chandran, Dr Ganesh Neelakanta Iyer, and Pavithra Devi Pannirselvam. Accompanying them are traditional musicians from India, enhancing the immersive atmosphere with live percussion and vocal accompaniments.
The event will also feature unique pre-show experiences, including the ceremonial Keli ritual and behind-the-scenes sessions that provide audiences with deeper cultural insight. Digital surtitles and follow-along guides will ensure the art form remains engaging and accessible to all viewers, regardless of familiarity with the genre or language.
The Kathakali Festival 2025 reaffirms Singapore’s commitment to celebrating diverse cultural heritages through engaging, high-calibre performances that resonate across generations.
