‘Once Upon a Tide’ explores the nation’s maritime journey from ancient settlement to modern global city through over 350 artefacts and interactive displays.
In celebration of Singapore’s 60th year of independence, the National Museum of Singapore will unveil a landmark exhibition titled Once Upon a Tide: Singapore’s Journey from Settlement to Global City. Running from 24 May 2025 to October 2026, the special showcase offers visitors a comprehensive view of the island nation’s transformation over 700 years, shaped by its relationship with the sea and river.
Held at Exhibition Galleries 1 and 2 (Basement Level), the exhibition features more than 350 artefacts from the National Collection, alongside virtual projections, dynamic maps, and an RFID-enabled personalised experience. Visitors will be invited to chart their own journey through Singapore’s maritime history and contribute reflections on the country’s global identity and collective future.
The exhibition highlights Singapore’s role as a key maritime hub dating back to the 14th century and explores the ongoing flows of people, goods, and ideas that have shaped the nation’s identity and growth. From early trading settlements to a cosmopolitan global city, Once Upon a Tide brings together history, innovation, and community engagement in a richly immersive setting.
Admission is free for Singaporeans and Permanent Residents, with tickets ranging from S$18 (concession) to S$24 for tourists and non-residents. The exhibition is open daily from 10am to 7pm (last admission at 6.30pm).
