PM Rabuka’s official visit to Singapore strengthens collaboration between two Small Island States.
SINGAPORE – Prime Minister of Fiji, Sitiveni Rabuka, made an Official Visit to Singapore from 21 to 23 April 2025, at the invitation of Singapore’s Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Lawrence Wong. This marks Prime Minister Rabuka’s second visit to the Republic, following his first in 1998.
Prime Minister Rabuka received a ceremonial welcome at Parliament House on 22 April before engaging in official discussions with Prime Minister Wong. The visit included an official lunch hosted in Rabuka’s honour, highlighting the growing warmth and trust between both nations.
During his visit, Prime Minister Rabuka also met with Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong at the Istana, rekindling ties from their first meeting in 1998. Their dialogue focused on strengthening cooperation between Small Island Developing States and advanced economies, addressing shared challenges such as climate change, digital transformation, and sustainable economic growth.
In the meeting, Prime Minister Rabuka acknowledged Singapore’s transformation journey, noting that Fiji draws valuable lessons from Singapore’s experiences, especially in the fields of innovation and resilience-building.
Rabuka also made a site visit to the Maritime and Port Authority’s Port Operations Control Centre on 23 April, where he observed Singapore’s best practices in port operations — a sector critical to both countries’ economic strategies.
The visit further reinforces Singapore’s long standing support for the Pacific region, particularly since becoming a Dialogue Partner of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) in 2022. Over the past 30 years, Singapore has trained more than 1,500 Fijian officials under its Singapore Cooperation Programme, strengthening regional capabilities and fostering deeper partnerships.
