On Thursday, 8 May 2025, the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in Singapore will host a thought-provoking book talk featuring Professor Amitav Acharya, Distinguished Professor and UNESCO Chair at American University, Washington, DC. The event will delve into his latest publication, The Once and Future World Order: Why Global Civilization Will Survive the Decline of the West. Joining him as a discussant is Mr Kishore Mahbubani, Distinguished Fellow at the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore.

In his book, Acharya challenges the conventional narrative that the West has been the sole architect of global order. Drawing from over 5,000 years of history, he illustrates how principles such as diplomacy, economic interdependence, and humanitarian values have roots in various non-Western civilizations. He posits that the decline of Western dominance does not equate to global disorder but rather presents an opportunity for a more equitable, multipolar world.

Mahbubani, a seasoned diplomat and scholar, echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of embracing a multicivilizational perspective in shaping future global governance. He asserts that the rise of the Global South should be viewed not as a threat but as a chance to enrich the global knowledge pool and foster mutually respectful international relations.

The event will be chaired by Professor Khong Yuen Foong, Co-Director of the Centre on Asia and Globalisation and Li Ka Shing Professor in Political Science. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase Acharya’s book post-lecture for SGD 56.68, with various payment methods accepted.
