BEIJING, China – At the Fourth Ministerial Meeting of the China-Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) Forum held on 13 May, Mexican Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente advocated for enhanced political dialogue and international cooperation to address global challenges.

Addressing delegates at the China National Convention Center, De la Fuente emphasized the importance of unity, collaboration, and coordination among nations, while maintaining sovereignty. He stated, “We are facing a historic opportunity to revitalize international political dialogue and strengthen cooperation and consensus-building among our regions.”

De la Fuente highlighted the need for pragmatic and inclusive political dialogue, urging reforms that uphold the United Nations’ role in legitimizing collective decisions. He reiterated Mexico’s commitment to initiatives that build bridges between countries and complement national, regional, and multilateral efforts in cooperation and development.

The forum also saw Chinese President Xi Jinping announce nearly $10 billion in new credit lines to Latin America and the Caribbean, aimed at supporting development and increasing the international use of the yuan. Additionally, a visa-free travel policy for five countries in the region was introduced, signaling stronger diplomatic and economic ties under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Trade between China and Latin America reached $515 billion in 2024, a significant increase from $12 billion in 2000. President Xi emphasized further cooperation in areas like clean energy, AI, 5G, and cybersecurity, positioning China as a stable partner amid global economic shifts.

The ministerial meeting marked the 10th anniversary of the China-CELAC Forum, reinforcing the commitment of both regions to deepen cooperation and address shared challenges through multilateral engagement.
