Tony Tay’s inspiring journey from humble beginnings to founding Willing Hearts, a charity that feeds thousands in Singapore daily.

Singapore – In a conversation with IN Diplomacy’s Editor-in-Chief Ms. Nomita, Tony Tay, the Chairman and member of the Board of Directors at Willing Hearts, shared his remarkable story of compassion and service. Willing Hearts, a Singapore-based non-profit organisation, has been at the forefront of feeding the needy, providing meals to thousands every day.

Tony Tay’s journey is a tale of resilience and generosity. Born into a single-parent family and raised in a convent, he experienced the kindness of strangers from a young age. This early exposure to charity profoundly shaped his values. After starting his career in insurance—working at the Insurance Corporation of Singapore (1970-1973) and later founding his own insurance booking office—Tay transitioned into full-time philanthropy.

Founded in 2003 following the death of Tay’s mother, Maggie, who was known for her charitable deeds, Willing Hearts began modestly. Initially, Tay and his wife Mary distributed unsold bread to migrant workers and low-income families. Over the years, the organisation has expanded, operating 365 days a year with a 6,000 square-foot facility, and providing a range of services including dental and optical care, legal aid, and other forms of support.

In 2017, the organisation’s kitchen was the size of two badminton courts, and it now feeds over 6,000 individuals daily. Tay, who was awarded the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award, emphasises that the organisation thrives on the enthusiasm of its volunteers. “I do not raise funds,” Tay explained, highlighting that donations come from a wide range of individuals, from CEOs to blue-collar workers.

Willing Hearts serves a diverse range of beneficiaries, including the elderly, persons with disabilities, single-parent families, and migrant workers—those who have fallen through the cracks in Singapore’s affluent society. Tay’s faith and unwavering commitment continue to be the driving force behind the charity.
