ASEAN leaders convene in Kuala Lumpur to map out long-term strategies for trade, digital growth, and regional harmony.
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – The 46th ASEAN Summit commenced today at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, bringing together leaders from Southeast Asia to deliberate on regional integration, economic resilience, and strategic partnerships. Under Malaysia’s chairmanship, the summit operates under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability,” reflecting a commitment to cohesive growth amidst global uncertainties.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, in his opening address, emphasized the significance of 2025 as the 10th anniversary of the ASEAN Community. He highlighted the summit’s role in shaping the bloc’s future through the adoption of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045.
ASEAN Secretary-General Dr. Kao Kim Hourn presented a comprehensive report on the progress of ASEAN Community-building in 2025. He underscored key deliverables aligned with Malaysia’s chairmanship theme, focusing on enhancing intra-regional trade, digital transformation, and sustainable development initiatives.
The summit also addresses pressing geopolitical and economic challenges. Member states are formulating a unified response to recent U.S. tariff hikes, which have imposed duties ranging from 10% to 49% on ASEAN exports. Leaders are advocating for deeper economic integration and exploring new growth areas, including the digital and green economies, to bolster regional resilience.
The summit also provides a platform for addressing the ongoing crisis in Myanmar. Prime Minister Anwar has initiated diplomatic efforts by facilitating separate talks with Myanmar’s military leadership and the opposition National Unity Government, signaling potential for direct dialogue aimed at resolving the conflict.
As the summit progresses, ASEAN leaders are expected to adopt the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, outlining a strategic roadmap for the next two decades. This vision aims to foster a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable ASEAN, reinforcing the bloc’s centrality in regional and global affairs.
