Explore Peranakan culture through community-led performances, heritage tours, crafts and cuisine in a vibrant weekend of storytelling and celebration.
Singapore, 11 June 2025 – This weekend, 14–15 June 2025, the Peranakan Museum invites visitors to step into the vibrant world of Peranakan culture through “An Emerald Tale”, a community-led programme presented in partnership with the Peranakan Association Singapore. From 10am to 5pm daily, guests of all ages can enjoy a rich array of activities including performances, craft workshops, heritage talks, cooking demonstrations and curated tours — with free admission to most events.
The programme brings to life lesser-known stories of Peranakan heritage, with immersive experiences designed to engage both long-time enthusiasts and new audiences. Highlights include bead-making sessions, hand fan crafting, and food tastings featuring traditional favourites like kueh dadar and putu tegair, accompanied by live cooking demos. Music lovers can enjoy nostalgic performances by Peranakan Sayang and Melissa Sidek, while the charming Nyonya Stella Wee leads a heritage walk along Armenian Street, sharing tales of old institutions that once shaped the neighbourhood.

For those interested in design and conservation, the talk Treading Lightly with Care by heritage consultant Ho Weng Hin explores the restoration of a townhouse on Emerald Hill, highlighting how architectural preservation can honour tradition. Meanwhile, jewellery specialists Francis Ngau and Shawn Seah will present A Family Tradition of Jewellery, a session delving into the craftsmanship and legacy of Peranakan adornments.
Visitors can also enjoy discounted admission to the museum’s special exhibition “Batik Nyonyas: Three Generations of Art and Entrepreneurship” during programme hours ($5 for Singapore citizens/PRs and $12 for foreign residents/tourists). This showcase tells the story of three Indonesian women whose creative spirit and business acumen are reflected through intricate batiks and heirloom pieces.

In addition, those who visit “Peranakan Reimagined” at Sentosa’s Sensoryscape (ongoing till 31 August) and share photos on social media with the hashtags #SentosaSensoryscape and #PeranakanReimagined can enjoy 20% off Peranakan Museum tickets, along with special dining and attraction deals in Sentosa.*
“An Emerald Tale” is more than a weekend event – it is a heartfelt celebration of culture, identity and memory, curated and shared by the community itself.
