For the first time, Uzbekistan will join the governing body of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, marking a milestone in its global agricultural engagement.

The Republic of Uzbekistan has been elected, for the first time in its history, as a member of the Council of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for the 2028–2029 term. The country’s unanimous election marks a significant step in its engagement with global efforts to advance sustainable agriculture and food security.

The FAO Council, comprising 49 member states, is responsible for guiding the organisation’s work, including its budget, programmes, and policy directions. Elections to the Council are based on equitable geographical representation, and members serve for terms of up to three years.

Uzbekistan’s election is widely seen as recognition of its comprehensive agricultural reforms and food security efforts, which have been implemented under the leadership of the President of Uzbekistan. The country’s increasing role in regional and international development also reflects its growing engagement in global decision-making forums. As a member of the FAO Council, Uzbekistan will now have a platform to contribute to shaping international food and agricultural policy, developing global standards, promoting regional cooperation, and advocating for strategic projects and financing to support sustainable development in agriculture.
