Visit marks 60 years of diplomatic ties with a focus on deeper cooperation and shared challenges.
The Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, Sam Mostyn, is on a State Visit to Singapore from 3 to 6 August 2025. On 4 August, she called on President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and met Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong.
During their meeting, President Tharman and Governor-General Mostyn reaffirmed the enduring friendship and close partnership between Singapore and Australia, underpinned by a deep reservoir of trust, economic complementarities and excellent people-to-people ties. They welcomed the multi-faceted and forward-looking nature of the bilateral relationship, as Singapore and Australia commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year. They also discussed shared priorities such as mental health support for young people and the upskilling of workforces in light of evolving labour market demands.
To mark the anniversary, Governor-General Mostyn presented President Tharman with a specially commissioned piece of Australian Indigenous art. In return, President Tharman gifted a symbolic artwork by Leong Sijun, a differently abled Singaporean artist, representing Singapore’s growth and diversity over six decades.
Governor-General Mostyn and Prime Minister Wong also welcomed the ongoing cultural and people-to-people exchanges between both nations. They emphasised the significance of the Singapore-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), which is set to be upgraded later this year during Prime Minister Wong’s visit to Australia. The enhanced CSP will expand cooperation in key areas such as defence, supply chain resilience, renewable energy, and cyber and critical technologies.
As part of her visit, Governor-General Mostyn was honoured with a new orchid hybrid named Aranda Sam Mostyn during a visit to the National Orchid Garden.
President Tharman hosted a State Banquet in honour of Governor-General Mostyn in the evening.
