Singapore marked a major milestone in rugby league with its national team’s debut victory at the Asia Championships.
Singapore achieved a significant sporting milestone when the Memerang national rugby league team made its international debut, securing an impressive 48–4 victory over Japan’s Samurais at the Asia Championships. The achievement was highlighted in an update shared this week.
A notable figure in the match was Tylan Berryman, an Australian rugby league player with Singapore heritage through his grandmother, who was born in Singapore. Wearing jersey number 7, Berryman brought valuable experience from his time with South Sydney’s SG Ball and Jersey Flegg teams, contributing to Singapore’s dominant performance.

The match marked a historic first appearance for the Memerang on the international stage, showcasing the growing development and competitiveness of rugby league in Singapore. The team’s strong debut also reflected increasing interest and investment in the sport across the country.
Singapore’s victory secured them a place in the Championship finals, scheduled for Saturday. The team is set to face the winner of the match between Hong Kong and the Philippines, as anticipation builds for the next stage of their campaign.
The triumph underscored Singapore’s commitment to expanding its sporting presence regionally and highlighted the value of global connections, talent development, and community support in raising the nation’s profile in rugby league.
